Press release: Woodward Selected by Airbus to Provide Balance of Plant Solution for ZEROe Fuel Cell Demonstrator Contributing to Zero-Emission Flight
FORT COLLINS, Colo., Dec. 05, 2022—Woodward, Inc. (NASDAQ:WWD), a global leader in aerospace energy conversion and control, announced that it will work together with Airbus to provide the Fuel Cell Balance of Plant (BoP) solution for the ZEROe demonstrator, which aims to put a zero-emission aircraft into service by 2035.
Woodward will contribute advanced design capabilities and world-leading fuel technologies to the ZEROe project for more sustainable air travel based on hydrogen propulsion. Woodward’s BoP will contribute an essential part of the project, with a comprehensive package of monitoring and control means for hydrogen fuel and air for the hydrogen fuel cell system.

Woodward’s key SOGAV product acquires IGF-code compliance
Woodward’s Colorado SOGAV and Compliance teams have achieved a significant milestone with the company’s SOGAV product line. The SOGAV235 is now IGF-code-compliant and officially listed for IGF zone “0” applications. . Also the SOGAV105/145 has recently received the listing for IGF zone “0”.
Achieving IGF-code compliance represents a considerable challenge. One that the Woodward team has mastered smoothly – both in terms of NPI design and manufacturing location qualification. The SOGAV235 is now IGF-code-compliant and officially listed for IGF zone “0” applications. Compliance for the SOGAV105/145 is in the pipeline and expected in the not-too-distant future. Work on compliance for the SOGAV65 is also underway.
Woodward’s newly developed SOGAV235 gas admission valves succeed the company’s SOGAV250 and are commonly used in marine engine applications. The SOGAV235 will provide the same benefits as the SOGAV65 and SOGAV105 INSERT.
SOGAV: Gas admission solutions for improved engine performance: The SOGAV™ valves (Solenoid-Operated Gas Admission Valves) are a family of electrically actuated, high-response gas admission valves for in-manifold (port) fuel admission. They are designed for use on four-cycle, turbocharged, natural gas or dual-fuel engines. The performance and characteristics of a gas and dual-fuel internal combustion engine are significantly influenced by SOGAV gas admission valves.
SOGAV valves provide reliable and precise control of gas fuel admission in multipoint gas and dual-fuel engines. Woodward SOGAV valves are used in power generation, marine, rail and mining vehicle applications. The SOGAV valve is designed to be used as the valve portion of an overall gaseous fuel admission system delivering precise gas mass flow metering per cylinder. This enables gas engines and dual-fuel engines to operate lean burn – with increased efficiency and reduced emissions. They are available in gas mass flow metering capacities ranging from 70kw/cyl to 1500kw/cyl.
Woodward will be pleased to provide more detailed information on the newest SOGAV models, which allow a wider range of pressures and improved field service.
A new product range for power-to-X fuels
The combustion engine industry is accelerating its efforts to decarbonize and switch from fossil fuels to alternative fuels produced from renewable sources (P2X), such as hydrogen, methanol and ammonia. There is a broad variety of combustion concepts for these fuels, and the best choice strongly depends on the target application. Woodward and Woodward L’Orange are developing a comprehensive portfolio of injection systems for P2X fuels for large engines – ranging from 100 kW/Cylinder to over 1000 kW/Cylinder – to enable all possible combustion concepts. For applications that require the highest levels of power density and efficiency, we have developed our High-Pressure Dual-Fuel (HPDF) platform for methanol and ammonia injection with full diesel backup capability.
Our new product range of direct solenoid actuated injection systems is perfectly tailored to meet market requirements for simpler and retrofittable systems:
- For methanol, we are developing a family of injection systems for Port Fuel Injection (PFI) and Direct Injection (DI). The injectors are designed for optimal atomization of the fuel to allow good mixing and minimize wall wetting.
- Injectors for hydrogen are also in development. Like methanol, they can either be used to inject the hydrogen directly (DI) into the combustion chamber or to integrate the injectors close to the intake valves into the intake manifold (PFI).
For gas engines that are adapted to run on gaseous P2X fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, Woodward’s well-known SOGAV gas admission valves are being optimized to withstand the properties of these fuels such as poor lubricity, corrosion behavior and hydrogen embrittlement.

We have already achieved a lot in the areas of climate protection and energy efficiency at our production sites. We are aware of our responsibility and have implemented many different measures. In 2022, for example, we reduced our CO2 emissions by 80%! We are already meeting the annual emission reduction targets for the coming decades – to limit global warming to well below 2°C – in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement. On our journey towards becoming a climate-neutral company, we will be connecting to the Glatten local heating network in 2023. This will reduce our CO2 emissions by a further 10%.
Another logical step is the conversion of our packaging. We will soon be switching to 100% recycled packaging. As a result, our packaging will no longer be orange, but gray. The reason is quite simple: The raw material is so-called post-consumer recycled material. It consists of packaging waste that has been recycled by the end consumer. The recycled material is dark gray. Since the material mix determines the color shade, there may also be different shades of gray in the packaging.
We see this packaging switch as an interim step only. Of course, our efforts will extend further in the future, because the ideal packaging for us would be compostable or residue-free degradable. Currently, no such material is available on the market that meets our requirements in terms of impact resistance, weight, moisture, oil/heat/cold resistance and functionality. We will keep working to achieve this target in the future for the sake of the environment, sustainability and social responsibility.

80% REDUCTION IN CO2 IN 2022
